MORLEY WOMEN TRAVEL THROUGH HISTORY?
At our recent Group Meeting it was Morley’s turn to entertain other members of the West Ley’s Group. This event happens every three and a half years and you would be amazed how quickly the time passes. Our evening began with Steven Croots of Croots farm shop, and he had some very tasty goodies on show, he told us of the ten year efforts of him and his wife to get to the successful business they have built up, selling mainly locally produced foods.
The production that the ‘girls’ have been working towards during the past months was our version of “The Weakest Link” only we decided to call it the W.I. equivalent “The Dirtiest Sink”. The contestants in this battle of brains began with Eve, Boudica, Ann Boleyn minus her head, Elizabeth 2nd, Nell Gwyn, of the oranges, Victoria of Albert fame. Then followed Florence Nightingale, Mrs Pankhurst, Mrs Thatcher, Amy Winehouse and last but not least Queen Elizabeth 2nd. All lead down through the tricky questions by Ann Robinson of nasty fame! You can tell how difficult the questions were when the ultimate winner turned out to be Amy Winehouse! The only one to be voted off was poor old Anne Robinson; still I’m sure she’ll get her revenge somewhere in the near future.
The production was ably assisted by Jane and Sylvia backstage and the catering squad led by Elsie and Sylvia and the the raffle girls Katherine and Margaret. All in all a very hilarious night!

Pumpkin Competition was won by Audrey (Morley W.I) who had created an amazing Toadstool complete with fairy's and Steven Croots prize was won by Sylvia Booth (Morley W.I) again.
DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR MORLEY W.I.
Morley W.I entered a Craft Exhibit in this years W.I craft competition at Derby County Show,. Our entry was in the Novice Section and the theme was a Nursery Rhyme. We choose "Mary Mary Quite Contrary". After a lot of hard work over many weeks we were delighted to find we had won at our first attempt.
Our exhibit was also entered in the W.I Craft Competition at Bakewell Show as a first time entry, much to our delight we won again. So a very successful year for the craft team at Morley W.I.
Two trophies to go into the President's cabinet!
Symphony Concerts
Thursday of this week sees a group from Morley going to Birmingham for their second visit this year to Symphony Hall, this time to hear Holst's Planets Suite, earlier in the year they enjoyed a concert of British Classics. And no doubt more visits will be planned.
Walking Group
Morley W.I. Walking Group have under taken two walks so far since the group began earlier in the year, first was a walk to Broomfield Hall through the Derbyshire countryside followed by an excellent lunch in the college restaurant. The second walk took them a little further walking from Brackley Gate to Duffield were they joined by other W.I members at the pub for lunch,(seems to be a theme here!)
VISIT TO NOTTINGHAM MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Tuesday 17th November a group from Morley W.I made a visit to the new Magistrate's Court in Nottingham as the guests of Paula Hammond J.P, who had visited us as a speaker earlier in the year.
The day began early, most members taking the bus to Nottingham. After a stroll through Nottingham and an early lunch, they met up with Paula Hammond J.P for their tour which began with them looking behind the scenes and acting out the roles of court officials in an empty courtroom, They later went into the actual courts and viewed some cases. All told a very email accounts from your Hotmail inbox. Add them now.
Morley W.I. Southwell Trip
August saw Morley W.I. take its Summer trip, this year to Southwell and the Workhouse. We set off promptly from Brackley Gate and arrived in Southwell in time for lunch, some people choose to see the Minister and then lunch and others had lunch first.
The coach then took us to the Workhouse where we had an introductory talk, a short film and then we all set off we our audio tapes to tour the Workhouse at our own pace, the tapes certainly brought the place alive. The Workhouse has been beautifully restored by The National Trust.
Back to the coach at 4 o'clock to go for tea, laid on by a W.I in Ravenshead and an excellent tea it was too rounding off a lovely day.
Burrows Garden's Visit
Morley W.I. recently paid a visit to Burrows Garden's near Brailsford (signposted from the A52 to Asbourne). This privately arranged visit took place on a beautiful summers afternoon in June.
We arrived to be met by the current owner of these beautiful gardens, on what was once a Dairy Farm, but which is now being transformed into a series of gardens from Roses to Italian garden, immaculate lawns and borders full of flowers arranged in cool blues, to hot and fiery reds.
The owner is passionate about his work, does everything himself and is always looking for ways to enhance the gardens.
At the end of our visit we had opportunity to buy some plants and then partake of the delicious homemade cakes all reasonably priced.
Well worth a visit no doubt we will revisit at sometime in the future.
The gardens are open to the public at weekends.
